3 essential tips to rejuvenate your motivation to write

  1. Assess the situation. Take a step back and look at the big picture. Where are you in writing your dissertation? What has been done and what is there left to do? Do you need help? What kind of help? Take a notepad or a keyboard and jot down those questions and the answers. Jot down any and all ideas of who you could call on for help, encouragement or support.
    • Your professor
    • A former teacher or mentor
    • A trusted family member
    • A reliable friend
    • A councilor/therapist
    • A writing service
  2. Schedule. Use a calendar and schedule everything that needs to be done, and the day it will be done on. It doesn’t matter whether the calendar is paper or electronic. But make sure you will look at it every day. Make your schedule strict yet flexible so that you can handle bumps in the road as they come along.
  3. A popular saying goes like this, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” It really is important to write things down and then be accountable to yourself or someone else to stick to your plan and finish the project.

  4. Write. Yes, that’s correct. After you have looked after points 1 and 2 above, it’s time to start writing. Write something every day. As you read your research literature, write down notes. Write more than you think you’ll need. You can always discard some of the notes later. It’s better to have more than you need than not enough.

Writing every day helps you stay in the habit, in the routine of always writing. It doesn’t matter if you write a paragraph or 10 pages, just write every day. The momentum will build up and soon you will have written more than you thought you could. You can write this dissertation. You can finish. Just do it; you’ll see.
