The upcoming Easter is not only a time of family meetings, but also a period in which many people think about the availability of stores. The issue of opening commercial facilities on the second day of Christmas is particularly important for consumers – Easter Monday. Will we shop on April 21, 2025? Where will the stores open and on what terms? Check before you go for the missing products!
When does Easter Monday 2025?
In 2025, Easter falls on April 20 (Sunday), while Easter Monday – statutory day from work – falls on April 21. This is one of the most important days on the Christian calendar, also known as the second day of Easter. In Poland, it is a day off for both public and private sector employees. Therefore, many institutions and stores remain closed or operate to a limited extent.
Easter Monday – open or closed stores? Legal basis
Pursuant to the Act of 18 January 1951 on non -working days (Journal of Laws of 2023, item 1465) and the Act of 10 January 2018 on restriction of trade on Sundays and holidays and on some other days (Journal of Laws 2018 item 305) – Easter Monday is the day of trade ban. This means that Most large stores, shopping malls, supermarkets and discount stores will be closed on April 21, 2025. Employees of these institutions then have the right to a free day, and breaking the ban may result in high financial penalties for employers.
Is Easter Monday commercial?
Easter Monday is not a shopping day. Pursuant to the provisions of the Act on trade limitation, the ban applies to most commercial facilities, including:
- supermarkets,
- discount stores,
- drugstore,
- large -scale stores.
However, this prohibition does not cover all retail outlets – there are a number of exceptions that allow some facilities to function.
Are stores open on the second day of Easter?
Most stores, especially those belonging to large retail chains like Biedronka, Lidl, Carrefour, Auchan, Netto or Kaufland, will be closed. However, it is worth knowing that there are exceptions:
- local stores and small shopping points, which the owner decides to stand behind the counter, can be open;
- gas stations with a trade part – they are usually open and offer basic food products and drinks;
- Shops at stations and airports, which often operate in a 24 -hour system;
- Franchise facilities such as Żabka or Carrefour Express – some of them can be open, if the owner decides to work independently, without employing employees.
Where can you do shopping on Easter Monday 2025 (April 21)?
Although most stores will remain closed, shopping can be done in:
- selected points of the Żabka network – usually the owners decide to open shops on holidays, but it is worth checking local opening hours in advance;
- some franchise stores (e.g. Carrefour Express, Lewiatan) – if they are run by the owner;
- selected gas stations (e.g. Orlen, BP, Shell) – offer basic foodstuffs, drinks, as well as cosmetics or road accessories;
- small housing stores – also only if the owner decides to open them;
- shops and shopping outlets at PKP, PKS and airports.
It is worth remembering that opening hours can be very limited and vary depending on the location. It is good to plan shopping in advance and stock up on the necessary products on Holy Saturday (April 19), when the stores are open, but usually until 13:00–14: 00.
