Intel suspends plans

Intel suspends its investment plans for the construction of previously planned semiconductor factories in Germany and Poland until 2026. This decision is due to the company’s deteriorating global financial situation. Previously European Commission gave Poland the green light to notify public aid for investment in the construction of a semiconductor factory, which was to be built in Lower Silesia. The value of the planned public aid spread over the years 2024-2026 was to amount to over PLN 7.4 billion.

“We have received all possible consents from the European Union”

When asked in the PAP Studio whether this was the end of the dream of establishing a semiconductor factory in Poland, Olszewski assured that the government had done “absolutely everything” to make this investment happen.

We have received all possible approvals from the European Union. But it is an open secret that it had its problems. This is Intel’s individual decision. It concerns investments in both Poland and Germany. Intel says today that it will delay the implementation of this investment by about 2-3 years. However, we need to constantly observe, monitor the situation, and above all, the condition of Intel,” he said.

Olszewski expressed hope for returning to the concept of building the factory in two years. He added that “in the reality we live in, 2 years is an eternity”“. He emphasized that Poland will continue to strive and seek entities willing to invest in our country.

Intel’s investment in Poland

In June 2023, Intel announced a total investment of approximately $4.6 billion to launch of a semiconductor integration and testing plant in Miękinia near Wrocław. The company announced that the new enterprise would employ about 2,000 people. It was emphasized that Intel’s decision would also mean thousands of positions with suppliers and temporary employment during construction work.

Intel announced at the time that the new factory near Wrocław, combined with the existing silicon wafer production plant in Ireland and a second planned silicon wafer production plant in Magdeburg, Germany, will help create the first comprehensive and most technologically advanced supply chain of its kind in Europe in the field of semiconductor integrated circuit production.

Intel is headquartered in Santa Clara, California’s Silicon Valley, USA is a new technology company founded in 1968, one of the largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world. The American company listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange produces, among others, processors for personal computers, as well as IT and hardware solutions for data centers, artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles.
