Four decommissioned nuclear power plants

In the past There were four nuclear power plants operating in Italy. They were:

  • operating in the years 1963 -1987 Latina Power Plant with a capacity of 153 MW,
  • operating in the years 1964 -1982 Garigliano power plant with a capacity of 150 MW,
  • operating in the years 1978 – 1990 Caorso Power Plant with a capacity of 860 MW,
  • operating in the years 1964-1990 Enrico Fermi Power Plant with a capacity of 260 MW.

Nuclear power plant disasters

Latina, Caorso and Enrico Fermi power plants closed after the referendum of November 8, 1987written after the Chernobyl disaster in April 1986. At that time, the vast majority of Italian citizens said “no” nuclear energy. Italians once again expressed their opposition to nuclear energy after the disaster in Fukushima, Japan in March 2011. Therefore, the decision to build new nuclear reactors in Italy is quite surprising.

Technology partner urgently needed

During the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio on Lake Como Minister Urso said that the Italian government is working on establishing a new company (Newco) that will cooperation with a foreign technology partner will start third generation nuclear energy production in Italy, Ansa said. Urso did not name any potential companies or partners.

Return to nuclear energy

The government is also working on a draft billthe aim of which is to reintroduce possibilities of using nuclear energy using the latest available technology later this year, he said on Saturday Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto FratinThere is currently no operating nuclear power plant in Italy.
