A great controversy has been generated around Senator Miguel Uribe after a survey was published in which he is the great favorite of the Democratic Center for the next presidential elections in 2026. The situation generated a short circuit within the community: María Fernanda Cabal and Paloma Valencia, who also aspire to run for the Presidency, raised their voices in protest.
In dialogue with , Senator Cabal referred to the issue and revealed what former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez, natural leader of the Democratic Center, has said so far about the election of candidates for the next electoral contest that will define the replacement of President Gustavo Petro. The congresswoman took the opportunity to make a risky bet regarding the choice of people to run for Congress.
Regarding the possible aspiration to the Senate for those candidates who are in the fight for the Presidency of the Republic, Cabal explained that if the list is closed, this can be done very easily. If it is open, there would be difficulties. “Because you campaign for the Presidency, but you end up generating confrontation with the senators of the regions you visit.”
“It ends up competing with advantages to those who aspire to the Senate in the regions,” he added.
In that sense, he stressed that if the list is closed it is simply “voting for the logo”, taking into account that a large number of activists, candidates, pre-candidates, among others, join together, which adds up to the critical mass voting and, In this way, according to her, they will be able to regain the 50 seats that they occupied at some point.
The proposal to Uribe
María Fernanda Cabal took a risk and spoke about the possibility of former President Uribe being one of the candidates for the Senate and in this way he could have the possibility of returning to Congress. However, he pointed out that the idea would be for him not to be at the head of the list, contrary to how it had been handled in the past. He even pointed out that it was the last.
“When they removed me from the top of the list, taking the last place and following someone’s recommendation to take number 100, it was a fantastic experience,” said.
“I would ask Uribe to make the list last, because that will make many more people come out to vote. (…) I think he would like to, but the level of persecution in which they have infamously subjected the former president, I don’t know if he has the courage, although he is a warrior,” he pointed out.
The senator from the Democratic Center pointed out that so far she has not proposed it directly, but surely someone will have already whispered it in her ear. Likewise, he made it clear that Uribe is at no time disqualified from being able to run and even retain a seat that allows him to be in the Congress of the Republic again.
“It could go on the list and that would excite the public a lot,” commented on .
On the other hand, Cabal made it clear that it is normal for there to be democracy within the parties and, therefore, some disagreements due to the different positions that exist among the militants. However, he stated that the main thing is to be very clear about the principles and follow them in the same direction, all in search of the best for Colombia.
“This is normal for it to happen, but one has to reflect and express everything that violates standards and ethical minimums for healthy competition. (…) I’m sorry, but Miguel Uribe would not be a reliable candidate if he has those practices,” he said.
