Mateusz Lewandowski at Energy Days: Tauron intends to increase capacity in onshore wind energy. The scale of investment depends on regulations

What is Miejska Górka?

This is our newest acquisition. Literally two weeks ago, we took over a wind farm project located in the Greater Poland Voivodeship with a target installed capacity of nearly 191 MW. To the best of my knowledge, this is the second largest project of this type in Poland.

To what extent does this increase the capacity of the Tauron group in wind turbines?

We currently have 417 MW of assets already in operation. We have 164 MW in a very advanced implementation process. These are the farms of Mierzyn, Warblewo, Gamów, Nowa Brzeźnica, Sieradz. Some of them are already at the acceptance stage, the rest will be put into operation next year. Miejska Górka will allow us to add the above-mentioned 191 MW. The plan is to complete this investment by mid-2027, but we believe it will happen sooner. Putting all this together, we are on the podium in Poland when it comes to wind assets.

How much do you rely on this energy source in the future, especially in the context of the planned change in regulations, which is to unblock investments in onshore wind farms after eight years of legal paralysis?

We are in an advanced stage of work on our group’s strategy. For obvious reasons, I cannot reveal the details yet, but the key for all of us, including me from an investment perspective, is the assumption that from 2040 the Tauron group wants to sell 100% of its shares to its customers. energy from zero-emission sources, the vast majority of which are renewable.

Your own?

One way to achieve this goal is to build and operate your own assets, another way is to obtain energy from the market or through PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements). The proportions between these paths will depend on many factors, including those that are beyond our control, primarily the regulatory environment. It largely influences our financial strength, including investment opportunities. All movements related to the transformation of the energy sector that are currently being discussed are and will be of great importance. We assume that as a result of all these processes, we will have the ability to build our own production assets. Another important issue is the availability of interesting projects, such as the one in Miejska Górka. Much also depends on the scale of public support for the transformation towards renewable energy.
