Norwegians break the record

Of the 11,114 new cars, 10,840 are fully electric. This breaks the record from January this year, when combustion cars accounted for only 8 percent of vehicles registered for the first time.

At the same time, for the first time in history, the total number of passenger “electric” cars on Norwegian roads is greater than that of cars with a petrol engine.

“No country in the world comes close to the level of popularity electric carswhich we are currently experiencing in Norway. If this trend continues, we will soon reach our goal. We want all new cars sold in 2025 to be zero emission,” says Solberg Thorsen, director of OFV.

Why do Norwegian drivers choose electric cars?

According to Solberg Thorsen, Norwegian drivers choose electric cars for economic reasons. It emphasises the importance of incentives introduced by the authorities, in particular lower tolls for using roads and entering large cities and lower parking rates.

The most popular cars among buyers in August 2024 in Norway were:esla Y, volvo EX30, skoda enyaq, volkswagen ID.4 and toyota bZ4X. These five models accounted for half of all new cars sold during this period.
