The German company took control of the Polish port operator in Szczecin

The Rhenus Group acquired an additional 58.5% of shares in the Polish port operator Bulk Cargo – Port Szczecin, thanks to which it became the majority shareholder with a total of 98.5% of this company, Rhenus reported.

“The port of Szczecin, with its importance for European waterways, is also of great importance for the network Rhenus. The potential of this port in terms of environmentally friendly supply chains for the Polish, Czech and eastern German markets is enormous. As Rhenus, we have been supporting Polish customers for 30 years and we will continue to develop effective logistics solutions for them,” said Michael de Reese, director of the Rhenus Port Logistics division, quoted in the release.

Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority has already invested in development, including by deepening the waterway and strengthening the quay walls. “Therefore, we plan to use these previous investments and further develop port infrastructure, as well as transhipment equipment and technology in the port of Szczecin,” de Reese added.

Rhenus bought the first shares in 2022

Rhenus acquired the first 40% of shares in Bulk Cargo – Port of Szczecin in 2022. The Rhenus Group operates in Poland and has been active in the port of Szczecin for over 30 years. Employment in the group’s Polish companies reaches 3,500 people.

What does Bulk Cargo do?

As the largest terminal operator in Szczecin, Bulk Cargo handles approximately 4 million tons of goods annually. The terminal consists of eleven parking bays and 3.5 km of quay. Services provided in the Baltic port include transshipment of bulk and general cargo using specialized equipment, warehousing, transhipment and port forwarding by inland waterway, road and rail. In the past, the port was best known for transshipment of coal and ores for Polish mines, steelworks and coking plants, but today Szczecin is a multi-functional port, enabling the transshipment of bulk, general cargo and liquid cargo.
