Traffic intensity measurements show that speed cameras significantly contribute to improving road safety, which is why the main inspectorate of road transport so eagerly install both segmental speed measurements (OPP) and stationary speed cameras. Recently, Gitd announced the signing of the contract on Delivery and installation of 70 new modern speed cameras Traffistar SR390 on national roads.
The number of places monitored by section speed measurements is also growing rapidly. Currently, OPP systems are located in about 60 locations throughout Poland, mainly in the Łódź, Mazowieckie and Śląskie voivodships.
Speed camera tolerance – myth or truth?
There is a long time among drivers that there is a belief that Speed cameras have 10 percent tolerance. Unfortunately, this is not true. The high technical advancement of currently produced cameras allows you to determine the speed at which the car moves on the supervised section of the road. Does this mean that every speed exceeding will be fined? Well, no Because tolerance is, but it is not due to the imperfections of devices, but from the road traffic law.
When will a speed camera not issue a ticket?
Permissible tolerance of speed exceeding in the controlled area regulates Article 129h paragraph 5. 3. “Road Traffic Law”.
Article 129h paragraph 5.
“The minister competent for transport, having regard to the causes and location of road accidents, counteracting these accidents and the implementation of drivers to comply with traffic rules, will determine, by way of a regulation:”
point 3.
“Method of measurements by registering devices, taking into account the speed thresholds adapted to the speed limit in force on the road, and the processing of registered data by these devices, and also taking into account the driver’s error up to 10 km/h in maintaining the speed limit“.
What does this mean for drivers?
As you can see, the Act directly defines if the speed can be exceeded. According to the legislator, tolerance is 10 km/h. This means that for driving at a speed of 60 km/HW, theoretically built -up terrain should not receive a ticket. However, it is not worth trying to drive a limit, because the legislator has foreseen this tolerance range due to possible different scale of various devices and you never know if our meter shows exactly the same thing that will measure the speed camera.
According to the tariff, there is a fine of PLN 50 and 1 penalty point for speeding up to 10 km/h. However, no driver will get a mandate. Punishing begins with exceeding the speed by 11 km/hi more.
