José Félix Lafaurie, who is part of the Petro Government’s negotiating table in the peace talks with the ELN, dialogues that are in “intensive care”, went head-on against this guerrilla group following the recent attack on a military base in Arauca that left two soldiers dead and 29 injured.
“I think that (President Petro) closed the process, but since nothing has been set in stone… But since things here in Colombia always end up having nuances, we will wait to see what kind of decision the Government will make regarding this matter. But if you push me, the issue of peace is a very serious matter, because behind these conversations there are many dead people.a lot of violence, many communities that are displaced or confined, and I think that this needs to be taken a little more seriously,” said José Félix Lafaurie, who is also president of Fedegán.
In this regard, in , Lafaurie was emphatic in saying that the ELN cannot continue deceiving Colombian society and that We must be consistent with the suffering of millions of Colombians who live closely with the armed conflict.
On the other hand, when asked if he would stay or leave the dialogue table with the ELN, Lafaurie responded: “I must warn that I do not have a contract, that is, I am not here because I earn a peso, because there are those who might think, ‘oh no, the contract’, as someone told me (…). What will happen with the dialogue? I don’t know, let’s hope that this settles down (…); I do prefer to remain in a state of expectation like all Colombians.to wait for the Government to decide and after it decides, I will make the decisions that correspond to me to make individually.”
It is worth mentioning that this Tuesday, from the Casa de Nariño, President Gustavo Petro announced the “closure of the peace process” with the ELN, following the terrorist attack against the military base in Puerto Jordán, Arauca.
“Sometimes it is difficult to ask ourselves if we are going to continue like this, if those who are not part of a certain elite cannot be here and, at the same time, If then the consequence is that we are killing each other”, said President Petro at an event held at the Casa de Nariño, regarding the inauguration of a new magistrate of the Superior Council of the Judiciary.
President Petro also condemned vigorously the actions of the ELN guerrillas, taking into account that they are in peace talks.
