As indicated, as part of the agreement signed with Fortum and TVO Nuclear Services, a strategy will be developed to prepare Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) to act as the operator of a nuclear power plant in Pomerania. “The actions taken will allow for the appropriate planning of the power plant’s operation phase to ensure its full operational readiness in accordance with the adopted plan,” it added. It was noted that the agreement assumes support in ensuring the needs of the future operator already at the design stage of the power plant, in the implementation of contracts with the consortium of Westinghouse, as the technology supplier, and Bechtel, as the main contractor, as well as cooperation and exchange of experience in the development of fuel strategy and waste management. radioactive.

PEJ noted that the consortium of Finnish companies, acting as technical advisors, would also support them in developing a training plan for employees and an action plan covering detailed scope of tasks performed by the operator. “The selected advisors guaranteed the support of a team of experts with practical experience in the implementation and operation of nuclear power plants and ongoing cooperation with Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe, among others, as part of joint teams,” the company said.

As PEJ emphasized, Fortum and TVO are “world leaders in the nuclear energy sector.” “They own and operate nuclear power plants in Finland and Sweden,” it added. It was indicated that the first nuclear power plant in Poland would safely produce electricity for at least 60 years. “Managing the operation of such a facility requires prior preparation. (…) A consortium of Finnish companies Fortum and TVO Nuclear Services, which have experience in managing the first nuclear block of the most advanced generation III+ put into operation in Europe,” noted PEJ.

“Acting as an investor, both entities cooperated in the construction of the Olkiluoto 3 unit – so far the only commissioned nuclear block in Europe of the most advanced generation III+ large-scale reactors,” PEJ noted. They noted that they also have experience in meeting the requirements arising from the regulations of the European legal system, including in cooperation with the European Supply Agency (Euroatom Supply Agency), when it comes to the supply of nuclear fuel. Additionally, Fortum is a member of the EUR – European Utility Requirements association, to which PEJ has been a member since June 2022.

Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe is a company responsible for, among others, for preparing the investment process and acting as an investor in the project of building nuclear power plants with a total installed capacity of approx. 6 to approx. 9 GWe. The company also supports the government in the implementation of the Polish nuclear energy program and the implementation of the agreement between the government of the Republic of Poland and the US government regarding cooperation in the development of a nuclear energy program used for civilian purposes.
