Why is the 3G network being turned off?
The shutdown of 3G is due to the fact that it is an outdated technology that takes up network capacity. With the development of newer and more efficient solutions, such as 4G and 5Git is necessary increasing network capacityto meet the growing demands of users. These technologies offer much better call quality, faster data transfer and higher efficiency, and their maintenance is more cost-effective. That is why operators, including Orange, are gradually withdrawing 3G.
The bands currently used for 3G will be transferred to the network 4G/LTEwhich will allow for increased capacity and improved quality of service. In practice, this means better coverage, higher call quality and faster internet, even in places with high network traffic.
When Will 3G Be Completely Shut Down? These Phones Will Stop Working By The End Of This Year
Orange is taking action in stages, switching off the network in subsequent cities and regions. In September, the switch-offs will cover almost the entire Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship and surroundings. Then, in October, the network will be extinguished in the remaining part of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship and in some areas of the Lower Silesian, Masovian, Podlaskie, Warmian-Masurian, Greater Poland, West Pomeranian and Lublin Voivodeships. As announced by the operator, the process of completely extinguishing the 3G network in Poland will end no later than by the end of 2025.
What does this mean for 3G phone users?
Turning off the 3G network will mean that older phones (especially those from before 2016) that do not support 4G/LTE technology will not be able to use it. will lose the ability to use mobile internet. Although they will be able to switch to the older 2G network, this will limit their functionality. The 2G network only allows for calls and sending SMS messages, but does not support modern internet services. In practice, this means that users of such devices will have to give up using mobile internet or invest in a newer phone model supporting 4G/LTE to be able to continue using the full range of network services.
How to prepare for 3G shutdown?
For those who want to continue using the full capabilities of their phones, Orange recommends checking whether their device and SIM card support 4G/LTE and VoLTE (voice calls over the LTE network). Verification can be done in a simple way, by sending a free SMS with the text “CARD” to the number 80233. In response, information will be sent whether the given phone and SIM card are compatible with the new technology. Importantly, Orange allows its users to exchange the SIM card for one that supports LTE free of charge.
