The panel began a conversation about what is the purpose of the digitization process. Participants defined that it is guaranteeing access to innovative tools and digital technologies that contribute to improving the quality of life in various areas.
Marcin Wysocki, deputy director of the Cyber security department at the Ministry of Digitization, emphasized how much cyber security is associated with the digital transformation process. He pointed out that security in Poland is a public service.
– In connection with the Act on combating abuse in electronic telecommunications, we proposed self -regulation in the field of safety and telecoms passed the exam here. Have limited negative phenomena, such as false SMSs, for example – Marcin Wysocki gave an example.
– A lot has already been done in the area of cyber security, but you can still do a lot – he described, emphasizing in the context of the digital strategy the importance of consensus and cooperation involving all market participants: both public and private entities.
The thread of cooperation returned during the entire discussion. Panel participants emphasized that artificial intelligence is a chance for our country. However, if adequate financial and organizational effort is not made, it may be wasted. The prepared state policy regarding the development of artificial intelligence remained largely on paper. That is why a team game is necessary, everyone from the very beginning should be joined in building the strategy.
Unused potential
Maciej Pilipczuk, president of the board of Emitelu, talking about the goals of the digitization process, pointed out to improving the competitiveness of the economy and referred to security issues. He also cited the DESI report published annually, which indicates the state of the digital economy in the European Union to outline at what stage we are today. He noticed that Poland ranks 24th among 27 EU Member States, which best shows that there is still a lot to be done.
President of Emitel He compared the process of digital transformation to the Formula 1 race, in which Poland ranks further, even though it has potential to achieve more.
– You need five things to win it. First of all, the track, i.e. digital infrastructure. We need 5G connectivity, data centers, optical fibers, otherwise it will be racing on a rural road – he explained and added that 1.5 million farms in Poland still have no access to fast internet. In addition, as calculated by the president of Emitel, the need for a car, i.e. new technologies, such as AI, cloud solutions, data analysis, process automation.
This engine, as he noted, should then be placed at every place of the economy: from industry, through healthcare, to public administration.
– Another thing is a team of engineers. The races do not win alone. You also need to take care of the so -called PIT STOP, i.e. in this case to develop staff and increase the state’s digital competences. Especially that today about half of the people have them at a basic level. Finally, it is important to build a strategy, which must be long -term and establish business cooperation with science and administration – he concluded.
Maciej Pilipczuk described that the changes in the infrastructure are already taking place. Especially in the 5G communication area, although Poland is slightly delayed in this respect.
– Only recently was the auction at the frequencies of 700 MHz. Although Emitel released her in 2022 – he emphasized and added that in 2023 half of Poland was a white spot in terms of 5G range. In 2024, investments accelerated, but you still need several thousand access points to ensure coverage, but also strengthen the quality of the signal, especially in densely built -up places. This means, as he summed up, multi -billion investments that take time. However, they are created in an optimal way because operators share them.
– There are those who implement active investments, such as telecommunications networks, but also those who focus on passive, such as telecommunications towers. Our company is one of the second group He added.
Maciej Pilipczuk also mentioned the need to accept the amendment to the Act on the national cyber security system and to build a secure state of state communication that already operates in other countries.
– Investments in intelligent solutions at local government level are important. I am thinking of intelligent water meters or solutions for managing urban space. They will not only improve the quality of life, but also translate into savings – pointed out Maciej Pilipczuk.
Data centers and energy
Experts also discussed the role of data centers in digitization. Maciej Pilipczuk pointed out here to Ireland and Dublin, where the issue of permits to build data centers around the city ended. The reason was the high consumption of energy, which the local network can not stand. It is estimated that as part of the already issued permits, the data centers in 2030 will use 30 percent. energy of this country.
– This is important in the context of Poland, where the energy network is not perfect. That is why I think that you cannot give up local cloud solution providers and focus on hyperskalers and their data centers – emphasized Maciej Pilipczuk.
