According to data published by the Norwegian Road Federation, in 2024, fully electric vehicles accounted for 88.9%. new cars sold in Norway. Compared to the previous year, this means an increase of 6.5 percentage points. In 2023, electric cars accounted for 82.4%. all new car sales.

Norway’s ambitious plan
There are already more electric vehicles on Norwegian roads than petrol-powered cars. Nevertheless, Norway has an ambitious plan and wants to sell only zero-emission passenger cars and light cars by the end of 2025. However, as the director of the Norwegian Road Federation, Øyvind Solberg Thorsen, estimates in a statement quoted by Quartz, this goal will be difficult to achieve.
“The data and share growth show that the last few percent needed to meet the 2025 target may be difficult to achieve,” Øyvind Solberg Thorsen said in a statement.
Solberg Thorsen also believes that in order to achieve the 2025 goal of selling only electric cars, it is absolutely crucial that the Norwegian government maintains incentives for the purchase of electric cars.
What cars are drivers most likely to buy in Norway?
According to data from the Norwegian Road Federation, the best-selling brand in Norway is Tesla. The first two places in the ranking are occupied by models of this brand. Drivers in Norway were the most willing to buy Tesla Model Y and compact Model 3 SUVs. These two models together accounted for over 18%. all new cars sold in 2024
Next on the list were cars from brands such as: Volkswagen, Toyota, Volvo and BMW. Volvo, which was acquired from Ford by Chinese giant Geely in 2010, and its EV subsidiary Polestar sold more than 7,200 EX30 electric SUVs in 2024.
Further places are taken by other Chinese brands that are becoming more and more popular around the world. BYD, China’s largest car manufacturer, sold 2,669 vehicles in 2024which constitutes a share in sales of 2.1%.
