Following the tragic death of medical resident Catalina Gutiérrez, Universidad Javeriana announced measures to address the case

Faced with this situation, the Universidad Javeriana made the first decisions and, through a statement, stated: “In the context of the difficult and painful situation we are facing, we want to share with you the spaces for discussion and the concrete measures that the University has taken in the postgraduate training of the Faculty of Medicine.”

The institution noted that, since last Sunday, July 21, it began a series of listening and emotional support spaces. Consequently, he made administrative and academic decisions. In turn, he attended to the government authorities.

Initially, Javeriana implemented emotional support actions and spaces for conversation and listening to learn first-hand about the experience and vision regarding medical residencies. To do so, it developed the following activities:

  • Meeting of the rector, the dean of Medicine and the Vice-rector of the University Environment with all residents of the Specialty in Surgery.
  • Meeting of the rector, the dean of Medicine and directors of the San Ignacio University Hospital with 22 professors from the Department of Surgery.
  • Meeting with 40 chief residents from different medical specialties, attended by directors from the Faculty of Medicine, the Vice-Rectorate of the University Environment and the San Ignacio University Hospital.
  • Listening and emotional support actions, led by experts in psychology and psychiatry, with the following medical-surgical specialties: Plastic Surgery (8 residents), Ophthalmology (15 residents), Emergency Medicine (29 residents) and Urology (7 residents). We continue to develop this type of actions with the specialties of Family Medicine, Otorhinolaryngology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Internal Medicine and Gynecology.

Regarding administrative and academic measuresthe university detailed in its announcement:

  • Complaints, reports and requests received at the email address atencion.violencias@javeriana.edu.co, the email address of the rector, the Faculty of Medicine and the Legal Department are being processed. Based on the complaints received, disciplinary and administrative processes have been initiated.guaranteeing due process and activation of the PAAOS (Protocol for the Prevention, Care, Support, Guidance and Monitoring of cases of violence and discrimination and gender violence).
  • Through the coordination of the Academic Vice-Rectorate and the Vice-Rectorate of the University Environment, progress has been made as a priority.
  • The Academic Vice-Rector’s Office, the Vice-Rector’s Office for the University Environment, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Political Sciences and International Relations are structuring a series of workshops focused on the teacher-student relationship.
  • The Academic Vice-Rectorate is building a plan to consolidate the teaching staff of the Faculty of Medicine, focused on pedagogy and a culture of care.
  • Based on the information that has been obtained in the listening spaces, The University began a process of review, individual definition and compliance with the hourly load of the residentsIn this regard, one of the specific strategies is to strengthen the team of hospital doctors.

Additionally, he noted that actions were presented to prevent and address physical and mental health risks, as well as the Strategy for the Prevention of Violence and Discrimination with its respective Protocol (PAAOS).

Likewise, the Ministry of Labor visited the company on July 24, which focused on verifying compliance with occupational risk regulations and issues of psychosocial risk, gender equality and labor standards and resolution of conflicts and workplace harassment.

“As a result of the review, It was established that the University ‘had no findings that would allow for the initiation of an administrative investigation. However, the Elite Group for Gender Equality in Occupational Risks of the Ministry of Labor will support the team of the coexistence committee and other areas that may be included at the Universidad Javeriana, with a preventive talk on workplace and sexual harassment.’

Finally, Universidad Javeriana sent a message to its student community, stressing that it will continue “working consistently, assuming these actions as a priority and exploring new initiatives that contribute to strengthening our culture of caring for people. We also call for strengthening our personal commitment to caring for ourselves and others.”.
