Hennig-Kloska: The hydrogen peroxide experiment was a success. The level of golden algae in Kłodnica decreased by 95-99 percent.

High concentration of golden algae in Lake Dzierżno Duże and the Gliwice Canal

High concentration of golden algae at the beginning of August it was recorded in Lake Dzierżno Duże, as well as section IV of the Gliwice Canal, which is a corridor for Kłodnica. Provincial Crisis Management Center in Katowice reported that more than 105 tons of dead fish have been recovered from there so far.

The experiment was conducted under supervision Ministry of Culture and Environment it relies on dosing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to the river. Its use was to reduce the population of golden algae and, consequently, cause its less penetration into the Oderof which the Kłodnica is a tributary. In the river, there is no possibility of stopping the golden algae using a system of locks, as is the case with the Gliwice Canal.

The Ministry of Climate and Environment monitors the situation related to golden algae

“What we have been doing here for many days is aimed at limiting the effects of the disasterwhich is taking place in the Dzierżno Duże reservoir. (…) From this perspective, if I were to assess the situation today, we have it relatively under control. (…) The reduction (of golden algae – PAP) is taking place in the minimum by 95 percent, and in the maximum we managed to achieve 99 percent during the night hours,” she said Hennig-Kloska during Sunday’s press conference.

Dr. Łukasz Weber from the Institute of Environmental Protection explained that it is used in industry, among others perhydrol is about 30% hydrogen peroxide solution, and hydrogen peroxide is about 2% solution. However, the dose dosed to Kłodnica is a thousand times lower than in the case of hydrogen peroxide. This allows effective control of golden algae without significant damage to the natural environment.

Effective dosing of hydrogen peroxide without harming fish and the environment

This was confirmed by the chairman of the scientific council of the Polish Angling Association, Prof. Bogdan Wziątek, who said that no increased fish kill had been observed on the Kłodnica. Fish observed in several points remain active, and traces of beavers and otters, among others, have appeared downstream. He added that the fish were deliberately scared downstreamso that they are not exposed to higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, which decomposes over time.

The head of the Ministry of Climate and Environment announced that hydrogen peroxide dosing to Kłodnica will continue as long as it is necessary.

Experiment with a silicon-based preparation under the supervision of the Ministry of Infrastructure

In parallel, under the supervision of the Ministry of Infrastructure, an experiment was carried out concerning nNeutralization of golden algae with a silicon-based preparationwhich could be used in reservoirs with standing water, e.g. lakes.

“We do not yet have an assessment of the possibility of applying this experiment in practice for such a large reservoir as Dzierżno Duże. (…) This experiment (using hydrogen peroxide – PAP) is conducted on a living organism, on an actual environmental disaster, we are working to prevent the golden algae from entering the Oder and we are managing to apply this experiment in practice. (…) That experiment (using a silicon-based preparation – PAP) was conducted in strictly experimental conditions on a small sample. It is time to assess its effects,” said Hennig-Kloska.

Daily activities at Dzierżno Duży and no illegal pollution

Around 200 people are involved in the activities on Dzierżno Duże every day. They consist of, among other things, catching dead fish, improving the quality of water for fish that still live in the lake, and limiting the passage of golden algae to section IV of the Gliwice Canal and further to Kłodnica.

No such occurrence was observed over Dzierżno Duży. illegal pollution discharges. The tests also did not reveal any pollution, e.g. industrial, that could directly lead to fish kills. (PAP)
