New challenges for Europe’s competitiveness
For years, Europe operated in a relatively stable economic environment, which no longer exists today. The world is increasingly divided into competing geopolitical and economic blocs, and access to energy, raw materials, technology and markets increasingly depends on real economic power.
The data shows growing pressure on the European economic model – regulatory burdens have increased by 42% in the last five years and many competitiveness indicators have not improved.
High energy costs and CO₂ emissions remain one of the biggest challenges. Energy prices in Europe are significantly higher than in the economies with which we compete. If this problem is not solved, Europe may gradually lose its industrial base.
Financing the economic transformation also remains a significant barrier. European companies face limited access to capital, unclear competition criteria and lack of effective support instruments for SMEs.

Priorities for the new EU industrial policy
Rebuilding the competitiveness of the EU economy requires reducing energy costs and CO₂ emissions, improving access to finance, fair international trade rules and strengthening the “Made in Europe” concept.
The EU should more actively protect its market, industrial base and technologies, using trade instruments against imports based on distorted production costs, which weaken the competitiveness of European producers.
Protecting European value chains is also crucial. It should become a standard for spending public funds, allowing foreign investments and designing EU policies. This includes, among others: using non-price criteria in public procurement, supporting industrial production in the EU and strengthening European technology suppliers.
The energy transformation should be based on a support system for industry, and not solely on cost mechanisms. It is necessary to allocate appropriate funds from the EU budget to decarbonize energy-intensive industries and ensure fair financing for all regions of the Union, including Central and Eastern Europe.
