New gas field
Frida Kahlo is located in the Sleipner area, one of Orlen’s mining hubs Norwegian Continental Shelf. The well, thanks to which new resources were identified, was drilled from the Sleipner B. production platform, which allows – as the company emphasized – to launch production from the deposit without the need to build additional infrastructure.
He discovered a new gas and condensate deposit in the North Sea Orlen Upstream Norway together with partners. “The company plans to start their exploitation in the first half of 2026, and gas from the field will flow to Poland via a gas pipeline. Baltic Pipe” – Orlen announced in Tuesday’s announcement.
Resources of the new deposit
The company noted that “Frida Kahlo’s total resources were initially estimated at 5.3 to 9.4 million barrels of oil equivalentincluding 450 to 810 million cubic meters. gas.” Orlen Upstream Norway holds 24.41% of the license shares, and the partners there are Equinor, the operator – 58.35% of the shares, and Vår Energi – 17.24% of the shares.
“By using the existing infrastructure, we not only reduce the costs of developing new resources, but also shorten the time needed to start mining, and thus accelerate the return on investment,” emphasized Wiesław Prugar, who is responsible for the mining segment on the Orlen Management Board.
Record pace
As he assessed, “in the case of Frida Kahlo, the pace will be exceptional – the deposit will start contributing to the Orlen Group’s result just a few weeks after its discovery.” This gas will flow to Poland via the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline. “This is particularly important at a time when energy security, understood as the stability of raw material supplies, is becoming more important than ever before,” added Prugar, quoted in the company’s announcement.
Orlen pointed out that the inclusion Frida Kahlo for production “will additionally allow us to maintain the efficiency of the use of the mining infrastructure in the Sleipner area”, which in 2025 was responsible for approximately 30%. entire production Orlen Group in Norway. The company emphasized that it is crucial for the implementation of its strategy, which assumes that by 2030, 12 billion cubic meters will be delivered to Poland. natural gas annually from its domestic and foreign deposits.
In the case of gas extracted in the Sleipner area, it goes to the terminal in Kårstø, and from there through the Europipe II gas pipeline and the Danish transmission system – to the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline.
Orlen’s second discovery this year
Frida Kahlo is the second exploration discovery in the framework Orlen Group in the Sleipner area this year. In January, a deposit called Sissel was discovered there, the resources of which were estimated at 6.3 to 28.3 million barrels of oil equivalent, including 0.6 to 2.7 billion cubic meters. gas. The company owns 50 percent. shares in this deposit.
