Poczta Polska is facing an earthquake. “We are losing money on everything and restructuring cannot be postponed”

What changes await the post office?

In response to the question asked by “PB” about what the modernization should look like, Mikosz pointed out that the aim is for revenues generated by the network of branches and other businesses to have a larger share in the turnover of the entire group than the shrinking letter business in 2027. “From a post office focused on letters, i.e. implementing a business model from five centuries ago, we will transform into a courier-digital-financial company,” he said.

The need for rapid transformation

“I am not a spokesman for the former presidents and I do not want to analyze what they declared. From the point of view of the Post Office, however, what is terrifying is that for years everyone knew exactly what had to be done and did not do it. The transformation plan that has been created now is not some private discovery of mine. We created it mostly based on the knowledge of people from the Post Office who have been here for years. Things are so bad in the company now that it is good for the transformation – it can no longer be postponed for the sake of peace, because what had to be done in seven years has to be done in seven quarters,” noted the president of the Polish Post Office, refuting the newspaper’s accusation that “every subsequent president repeats the same thing.”

No plans to sell Bank Pocztowy

Mikosz was also asked by “PB” about the possibility of selling Bank Pocztowy to save the company’s condition. “No, we do not plan to sell Pocztowy, this is not a solution. Firstly – the bank requires capital injection, and secondly – its biggest asset is the postal network of branches, so it is not attractive to buyers. (…)

We are not in the logic of selling at all, this also applies to our properties. We have a lot of them in good locations, we want to use them in the same way that, for example, PKP uses its lands as part of joint projects with developers – declared Mikosz.

Personnel changes and the evolution of employee roles

The current president of Poczta Polska has terminated the Collective Labour Agreement (ZUZP) and announced a voluntary redundancy program covering 9,000 positions within a year. “For Poczta, the fundamental value is 20,000 postmen and another thousand employees of our branches, i.e. people who have direct contact with customers. Their role must evolve, they must have a more commercial function. It is not about them being traveling salesmen selling shoe polish, but rather simple, standard financial products,” Mikosz noted (PAP)
