Battery production – an amendment that is unfavorable for Poland
One of the implementing acts being prepared for the so-called Battery Regulation concerns the calculation of the carbon footprint of batteries produced for electric vehicles. An amendment introduced at the last stage of consultation provides that the calculations should take into account the structure of energy production in a given country, and not what energy the company producing the battery uses, the newspaper writes.
As a result, the amendment favours producers from Member States that already rely mainly on renewable energy sources or nuclear energy.and it closes the way to new investments in Poland and other countries with energy production still based mainly on fossil fuels. As “Puls Biznesu” adds, the amendment was introduced as a result of lobbying by France, a large European battery producer.
Poland is one of the world’s largest battery producers
Meanwhile, as the newspaper reminds, Poland is currently one of the world’s largest battery producers, and it is in Poland that the largest factory of lithium-ion cells for electric cars in Europe operates.
“Puls Biznesu” unofficially established that the Polish Ministry of Development and Technology has contacted the Commissioner for Internal Market and Services in this matter. Thierry Breton proposing that the methodology for calculating the carbon footprint of batteries for electric vehicles should reflect the actual energy mix used by the factory, also taking into account energy purchase agreements and so-called guarantees of origin of energy from renewable energy sources. According to the newspaper, Germany also wants changes to the regulations being prepared. (PAP)
