Research in Colombia: learn about the main strategies of the Military University in scientific production and innovation

Universities are, today, the main space for generating knowledge in Colombia. According to international, Colombian HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) are responsible for producing 81% of science throughout the national territory. This important work is fundamental for the development and progress of the country, so knowing more about its work in research and scientific production is key to promoting investment in this field; According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in the annual average of spending on research and development, Colombia was the member country that invested the least in this sector.

“Universities must look at their environment and understand social innovation as a responsibility, empowering future generations in their commitment to peace, human rights and environmental protection,” he stated. Furthermore, the rector stressed that investment in research must not only project Colombia internationally, but also It must also be an engine of social transformation that addresses the needs of communities historically affected by inequality.

Precisely, one of the key institutions in the development of studies and research in the country is the Nueva Granada Military University (UMNG). The institution reached position 7 in the Times Higher Education measurement carried out between November 2023 and January 2024where the results obtained represent the efforts of the New Granada community and the senior management that took office in August 2023 and will continue working to increase the levels of reputation of teaching, professor/student relationship, doctorate/undergraduate relationship, proportion of doctorates granted and institutional income, consolidating its role as a leader in research and innovation. In addition, it currently finances innovative projects in biotechnology, social sciences, engineering and medicine, with an investment of 25,000 million pesos.

Likewise, the UMNG has structured a system of calls that encourages the participation of 111 research hotbeds and 68 groups recognized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, including eight classified in category A1, the highest at the national level. In addition to the above, it has also developed scientific cooperation network programs that include research stays and postdoctoral programs, which offers its researchers and teachers opportunities to establish international connections and acquire experiences in prestigious institutions. This approach has facilitated the production of patents and the development of technological devices that respond to current problems in the country.

“The impact of the strategies for launching programs, publications, research and innovation at the UMNG is transcendental for its consolidation as a key actor in the academic and social spheres,” said Major Ayala Amaya, who has completed seven months in charge of the institution.

Digital Conversation

With the aim of knowing the institution’s strategies in research, innovation and knowledge transfer, and making its main advances visible, SEMANA Forums and the UMNG invite the digital conversation “Military University: pure science and innovation”, next Tuesday, November 5 from 9:00 am

This event will be preceded by the rector Javier Alberto Ayala, who has a solid academic background in law, security and defense, which includes doctorates from prestigious universities in Colombia and Spain, as well as a specialization in International Senior Management.

The conversation will include important topics such as the restructuring of research calls, the promotion of student participation in seedbeds and the strengthening of scientific cooperation networks. Don’t miss it!
