Musk announced the decision on his X account. He said the “final straw” for him was California’s Safety Act. The recently passed law prohibits school districts from forcing teachers to notify parents if their child identifies as transgender or wants to be referred to by a gender-neutral name or pronoun.
“Because of this law and many previous ones that have been an attack on families and businesses, SpaceX will now move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas,” Musk wrote on X.
Billionaire Vivian’s daughter Jenna Wilson, who filed a petition in 2022 to formally change her name and gender, said she no longer wants to “be associated in any way with her biological father.”
There is no state personal income tax in Texas.
Musk has had a soft spot for Texas for several years, CNN reported. In 2021, he announced he would move Tesla’s headquarters from the Bay Area to Austin, Texas. He also announced he would move his personal residence to Texas, which has no state income tax.
SpaceX, which employs more than 5,000 people in California, also has a large base of operations in Texas. Texas Governor Greg Abbott commented on the decision to relocate both companies from California by saying that it “will solidify Texas’ position as a leader in space exploration,” the BBC reported.
