Network of research and development centers
It is an initiative announced by the European Commission in September last year, which aims to create a network of specialized research and development centers in Europe. They are supposed to help in the EC make Europe a leading player in the field of artificial intelligence and stimulate innovation throughout the EU.
Piast AI factory in Poznań
According to the Commission on its website, the Piast AI factory in Poznań will strive to accelerate the implementation of AI technology in the academic and industrial sector, especially in the field of: health sciences and biological sciences, IT and cyber security (including quantum), space and robotics, balanced development (energy, agriculture and climate change) and the public sector.
Locations
In December, the EC chose the first seven locations, and on Wednesday she announced another six. As she reported, the factory of artificial intelligence outside Poland will be launched next year in Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany and Slovenia.
Six AI factories will be built thanks to national and European investments of around EUR 485 million in total. Factories will provide privileged access to start-ups dealing with artificial intelligence and small and medium enterprises (SME), which will promote growth and more effective expansion.
The project will receive EUR 50 million
The Polish Ministry of Digitization said that the project implemented by PCSS will receive EUR 50 million (PLN 200 million) from the EC, which will increase the current pool of PLN 340 million, provided by the Polish government for the development of AI factories.
The ministry also announced that the Cyfronet AGH Academic Center from Krakow, “using the experience of cognition and support of specialists of the IDEAS Institute”, will proceed to the competition at the beginning of May to apply for further funds for the development of AI infrastructure in Poland.
Eurohpc
The EC initiative – a joint undertaking in the field of European large -scale European calculations (EuroHPC) – brings together 17 Member States and two associated countries.
“Infrastructure and services provided by AI factories are necessary to use the full potential of this sector in Europe,” the EC said in a statement. “Thanks to the support of the world -class EU supercomputers network, these factories will combine the most important elements of innovation in the field of artificial intelligence: computing power, data and talents. This will enable companies operating in the area of artificial intelligence, especially SME and start -ups, as well as researchers, improving training and development of artificial intelligence models on a large scale, which will be trustworthy and ethical” – emphasized.
