The representative recalled that Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe obtained key administrative decisions for the first Polish nuclear power plant in the Lubiatowo-Kopalino location in the Choczewo commune in Pomerania.
This concerns the decision on environmental conditions, which was issued on September 19, 2023 by the General Director of Environmental Protection. The second document is the decision on determining the location of the investment, issued on October 26, 2023 by the Pomeranian Voivode. “The decision to determine the location of the investment is final and grants Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe the right to use the area for the purposes of preparatory work and construction of the nuclear power plant, as well as its subsequent operation,” the representative emphasized.
He also noted that the first works necessary at this stage of the project have already started in the location where the first nuclear power plant is to be built.
Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe announced on Friday that the area is being prepared for in-depth geological research, and related field work is entering the next stage. The area will be checked up to 6 meters deep, including: in terms of the presence of possible unexploded ordnance, e.g. from World War II. The next stage of work will be clearing the area.
PEJ explained that field research will begin in spring 2024, and Bechtel will be responsible for the work.
The company emphasized that the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland is a strategic project for the country. Its purpose is, among others, to: strengthening energy security through stable supplies of clean and environmentally friendly electricity. The commune where the plant will be built will also benefit from the construction of a nuclear power plant (income from taxes, as well as the development of accompanying infrastructure).
The Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium with which PEJ signed an agreement to design the power plant will be responsible for the power plant design.
The power plant is to be built using AP1000 Westinghouse technology and will consist of three units. According to the current schedule, construction will begin in 2026, and the first unit with a gross electrical capacity of 1,250 MW will be launched in 2033. (PAP)
