Voting on the ban on GMO feed

236 deputies voted for the amendment, 178 were against and 16 abstained.

The purpose of the amendment to the Act on Feed was to postpone the date of entry into force of the provision establishing a ban on the production, placing on the market and use in animal feeding in the territory of the Republic of Poland. genetically modified feed and genetically modified organisms intended for feed use – from January 1, 2025 to January 1, 2030.

Why was the entry into force of the ban postponed?

Prohibition on placing on the market feed derived from genetically modified plants and genetically modified organisms intended for feed use it takes time to find replacement, high-protein ingredients comparable to the imported product soybean meal.

The introduction of these components into feed requires taking into account the protein content, its nutritional value and the related effects obtained in the nutrition of farm animals, as well as the availability on the market of large batches of uniform raw material for feed production. The analysis of the feed balance in Poland indicates that in this climate zone there are currently practically no alternative high-protein raw materials that would enable the elimination of imported soybean meal from feed production.

The European Commission plans to review protein policy in 2024, providing a perspective for establishing a comprehensive EU protein policy aimed at reducing the EU’s dependence on protein imports and increasing domestic production.
