Asia – opportunities and challenges for Europe

Luc Williams

An important thread of the event, which will take place on September 3–5 in Karpacz, will be relations with Asian countries.

The discussion “The Age of Asia. What does the rise of Asia mean for Europe?” will be led by Krzysztof Zalewski, President of the Board of the Michał Boym Institute of Asian and Global Studies. As we read in the introduction to the debate, Asia is gradually playing an increasingly important role in the global economy. Moreover, future conflicts and tensions in some of its regions, e.g. in the South China Sea, may increasingly affect the situation in other areas. What are the most important processes taking place on the world’s largest continent and what significance do they have for Europe? The following will discuss this topic: Viktor Buzna, PhD Fellow from Sun Yat-sen National University, Taha Coburn-Kutay, Chairman of the UK Asian Business Council, Marcin Jacoby, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at SWPS University, Patrick Mendis, Alumnus and Rajawali Senior Fellow from Harvard University, Philip Merrell, Regional Director for Serbia and the Western Balkans at Aretera Public Affairs, and Liwei Wang, Editor of Caixin Media from China.

In the context of global competition, the Economic Forum will also include a discussion on China’s dynamically growing role in the international arena. The panel entitled “China – the new hegemon?” will bring together specialists in international relations and sinologists who will debate the current state of relations between the Middle Kingdom and the rest of the world. Moderator Radosław Pyffel from the Sobieski Institute will lead the discussion, which will be attended by Jean-Pierre Cabestan, professor of the Baptist University in Hong Kong, dr hab. Łukasz Gacek, professor of the Jagiellonian University, head of the China Department at the Jagiellonian University, prof. Bogdan Góralczyk from the European Center of the University of Warsaw, Roy D. Kamphausen, advisor from The National Bureau of Asian Research in the United States, and Dmytro Yefremov, board member of the Ukrainian Sinologists’ Association. The panelists will try to answer the question of whether China’s hegemony is inevitable and what determines its advantage in the global race for domination.
