João da Silva writes for the BBC that Kaspersky Lab is closing its operations in the US.
Purchase not possible for US customers
In a statement, Kaspersky Lab, which has decided to end its operations in the United States, says that it is a “sad and difficult decision” but that it had to be made because “doing business in this country is no longer profitable.” It is no wonder that it is not – last month, the Biden administration banned the sale and distribution of the Russian giant’s software in the United States due to concerns about interference in the products by Russian authorities. The decision was announced by Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.
The process of withdrawing from the States will begin on July 20, 2024, when US jobs will gradually be eliminated, but US citizens will not be able to buy Kaspersky software through the US website now. When they launch it, they will encounter a message that “purchase for US customers is not possible.”
Kaspersky fought and died
The law that allowed the Biden administration to target the Russian company was introduced by former President Donald Trump. It restricts transactions between U.S. companies and Russian and Chinese entrepreneurs. When Kaspersky learned of the regulation, it declared that it would fight by all legal means to be able to sell its products in the U.S. Now, the company apparently believes that it has lost this fight.
According to the Department of Commerce, Kaspersky Lab is an international corporation headquartered in Moscow with offices in 31 countries, 400 million home users and 270 thousand business users in 200 countries around the world.
