Mikołaj Dorożała, MKiŚ: Construction of the East Shield opens a discussion on the use of the natural environment as a security buffer

In an interview with DGP during the second edition Competitiveness & Security Business Summit, flagship event organized in Brussels by Business & Science Poland, the deputy minister emphasizes that in the face of contemporary geopolitical threats, the state apparatus and EU institutions must act quickly and flexibly. This postulate, which is strongly echoed at economic congresses, is crucial in the context of integrating defense activities with environmental policy.

Europe needs flexibility and agility, especially in the border zone

According to Mikołaj Dorożała, The time has come to apply “agile” methods in state policy, replacing lengthy decision-making processes with quick and effective actions. This is particularly important in the border zone with a width of 0 to 50 kilometers. Construction of dams and defense systems as part of the so-called Shield East opens a discussion on the use of the natural environment as a security buffer.

At the same time, as the deputy minister notes, it is opening up a path to innovative use of powerful European funds, such as the FEnIKS and LIFE programs. Some of these funds, so far focused strictly on sustainable development, could be used for activities in the Podlaskie and Lublin voivodeships, which would combine elements of defense infrastructure with effective protection of the local, priceless nature.
