Elon Musk will comply with Brazilian court rulings
Citing Musk’s lawyers, the Agenda Capital website reported that by Friday at the latest, the owner of the X network will file a document with the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil confirming that it will comply with all rulings of the country’s justice system.
Among the main demands made to Musk by STF chief judge Alexandre de Moraes is designation of the legal representative of the X network for Brazilcompliance with the imposed blocking of accounts of specific users of this network, as well as payment of all financial penalties accumulated in this country.
Brazil blocks network X
Brazilian authorities blocked the X network on August 31, saying Musk had refused to appoint a legal representative for the company, which violates Brazilian law. Previously, the South African businessman’s lawyers had opposed the need to appoint a legal representative for the X network, fearing that the person would be arrested.
On September 14, Judge de Moraes ordered Brazilian authorities to seize the equivalent of about $3 million from accounts of Starlin, also owned by Musk, and Platform X to cover fines levied against the social networking site.
Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court is investigating Musk
Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court in April opened an investigation into Musk for ignoring the country’s court rulings related to blocking the accounts of certain X users and online publications in which the millionaire called on Brazilian authorities to dismiss the head of that court. The STF considered these posts threats.
Musk has so far argued that the practice ordered by the Brazilian justice system is “censorship” that his company does not intend to use. He has also rejected arguments from Brazilian judicial authorities that freedom of speech on the internet threatens democracy. (PAP)
