Negative energy prices tease all of Europe

Luc Williams

In 2024, participation renewable energy sources in the Polish energy mix amounted to about 27 percent. This positions us rather with the European rate, while the entire region of Central and Eastern Europe is far from leaders. But everyone, though on a different scale, experience a problem with energy negative prices. This is a situation in which there is too much energy and producers pay extra for its consumption.

– The problem of negative prices occurs not only with us – says Michał Orłowski. – In Poland last year we had about 214 hours with negative prices, while the countries that were at the forefront are primarily Finland and some price zones in Sweden, in which this number of hours exceeded 700, but also Germany or France, in which there were over 500 of them – he calculates.

There is a shortage of warehouses

Where does negative prices in our system come from? One of the components is renewable energy sources.

– However, the real reason is that we also have in the source system that we cannot completely turn off. That is, the system is based on coal sources, which in particular on the day on which the sun is intensely shining, they have to work at a minimal load, in order to start when the sun stops shining – explained the vice president of Tauron Polska Energia.

The moment of energy production remains not adapted until the time of consumption, and there is a lack of large -scale energy warehouses.

– In Germany we have already reached 19 GWH, which is a huge scale of the fleet of energy storage. We are in Poland before this boom. I think that as well as the country and the company we see the need to invest in warehouses – said Michał Orłowski.

He reminded that Tauron last year won a power auction for almost 300 MW and a capacity of 1.1 GWH in warehouses.

– We try to accelerate these projects as much as possible, while the support we obtained is valid since 2029 – he reserved.

Michał Orłowski was a guest in the Zone of Dziennik Gazeta Prawna at the European Economic Congress in Katowice.
