PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna announced on the X platform that the construction of the gas and steam unit in Rybnik is entering a decisive stage.

“At the turn of the first quarters of 2024, a permit for the construction of this largest gas and steam unit in Poland is expected to be obtained. Ultimately, it will cover the demand for electricity for nearly 2 million households,” the company said, adding that advanced design work is in progress. and preparatory to construction. A comprehensive contract for the implementation of the main task was signed and environmental decisions were issued.

“The new gas and steam unit is not only modern technology, but above all strengthens national energy security in the era of transformation. It will replace four decommissioned coal units with a total capacity of 900 MW in the existing Rybnik Power Plant and will meet stringent environmental standards resulting from the conclusions BAT” – emphasized Wojciech Dąbrowski, president of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna. He pointed out that emissions of dust and sulfur oxides will be reduced to practically zero, which will affect the air quality in the Rybnik region. “After obtaining a permit for the construction of the gas and steam unit, we will immediately start intensive construction works,” Dąbrowski said.

According to PGE’s plans, the 882 MW power unit in Rybnik is to be ready at the end of 2026. According to the company, the unit is being built by a consortium of Polimex Mostostal and Siemens. The value of this investment is approximately PLN 4 billion net.

The unit is to consume approximately 1 billion cubic meters. gas per year. This gas will flow through Gaz-System gas pipelines. The gas transmission system operator signed contracts for the construction of the Racibórz – Rybnik gas pipelines with a length of 38.7 km and Kędzierzyn Koźle – Racibórz with a length of 37 km on January 8 this year.

The gas and steam unit currently under construction in Rybnik was awarded a 17-year contract in December 2022 in the main capacity market auction, which will come into force from 2027.

The Rybnik Power Plant came to the PGE Group a few years ago; previously it belonged to the French energy company EdF, which sold its Polish assets. In the Group’s structure, the power plant initially belonged to PGE Energia Ciepła, and currently to PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka cjonalna. (PAP)
