Turkish banks refuse to accept Russian companies

“Importers are again complaining about problems with payments through Turkey, whose banks are popular among domestic businesses (and are used to) transfer payments to other countries, including Europe,” the newspaper stressed. It was noted that the “pressures” are from two sides – Turkish and European banks.

The last time a similar situation was observed was at the beginning of this year, when Turkish banking sector began to fear so-called secondary American sanctions for cooperation with Russian companies. The problem worsened again in the summer. European banks began to refuse to accept payments from Turkish banks for goods to entities supplying goods to the Russian side, the sources said.

In this regard, in early September, the Turkish banking sector began to refuse to allow Russian importers to make such payments, the newspaper wrote.

Problems with the delivery of goods from Turkey to Russia

In July, the media in Russia reported that Shipments of goods from Turkey to Russia fell by almost 30 percent due to payment problems. Bilateral trade has been negatively affected by the risk of the US imposing so-called secondary sanctions on Turkish banks accepting payments from Russia.

At the end of 2023, U.S. President Joe Biden opened up the possibility of imposing so-called secondary sanctions against third-country banks for cooperating with sanctioned Russian entities and supporting the Russian arms industry.
