What days will there be shopping Sundays in 2024?
Since its introduction law restricting Sunday trading in 2018, shopping on this day of the week became the exception, not the rule. In 2024, the trade ban will not apply only on seven Sundays, including August 25. The last trading Sundays this year fall on December 15 and 22.
Exceptions to the trade ban. Where can we shop on Sunday?
Although most shops remain closed on Sundays, there is a list of establishments that are exempt from the ban. These include post offices, petrol stations, pharmacies, bakeries, confectioneries, ice cream parlours, cafes, flower shops, and online stores. It is therefore worth remembering where you can make essential purchases if necessary.
Interestingly, for breaking the Sunday trading ban severe penalties may be imposed. Entrepreneurs who decide to open their branches on non-trading Sundays may be fined from PLN 1,000 to even PLN 100,000. In the case of persistent violation of the regulations, the court may even impose a penalty of restriction of liberty.
Amendment to regulations – Will there be two shopping Sundays a month?
Currently, the Sejm is working on amendment of the regulations on Sunday trading. The project, prepared by Polska 2050, assumes the possibility of introducing two shopping Sundays each month. For work on these days, employees would receive double pay, and in addition, they would be entitled to a day off within six days before or after the shopping Sunday. Although the fate of this amendment is not yet decided, opinions on this matter are strongly divided.
