Starlink versus Oneweb. Can Eutelsat replace the Muska satellite network?

Luc Williams

In a defensive fight with a Russian invader Ukraine is largely based on droneswhose efficient actions depend on stable fast internet. Only a satellite network provides such access on the battlefield. Currently, the Ukrainian army consists in the Senline’s Satellite Internet network from Spacex. And as it seems, there is no alternative to the Muska network.

In the case of drones and other military operations, the lower orbit is of key importance because it provides higher speed and lower delay in data transmission. Currently, there is only one other constellation of satellites in low Earth’s orbit, which provides global access to the Internet.

The only alternative. But is real?

According to the n2yo.com website, which is referred to by the Statista, French-British Oneweb, currently has 628 satellites in low Earth’s orbit. Meanwhile, Starlink has almost 7,000 at his disposal.

Oneweb satellites, however, circle the earth on a slightly higher orbitbut they could probably also integrate satellites geostationally from its parent company Eutelsat.

It allows them to cover a larger area of satellite than their American competitors, but It also causes data transmission parameters to deteriorate. Both suppliers are therefore based on different concepts. But are they equivalent?

Oneweb is slower and outdated

The statista quotes an opinion that Andreas Knopp, a professor of information processing at the Bundeswehr University in Munich, told the German newspaper Handelsblatt. According to Knopp, OneWeb not only has much less satellites, but they are embedded in a higher orbit of earth than Starlinka. In addition, the OneWeb satellites are outdated, compared to American devices.

“Therefore, Eutelsat can only provide limited help in the case of critical temporary satellite connections, which are urgently needed directly on the front line,” Knopp said the German newspaper.
