Last week, President Gustavo Petro sparked a strong controversy in the country after he directly attacked Colombian female journalists “close to power,” publicly calling them “mafia puppets.” This unfortunate event took place during a speech in the department of Chocó.

“The journalists of power, The mafia’s puppets built the thesis of terrorism in protest and the criminalization of the genuine right to protest. We must undo the wrong, as Don Quixote of La Mancha said,” said the head of state, with a defiant and aggressive tone.

The Democratic Center spokesperson has not been the only one who has come out to question the head of state publicly, since Angela Benedetti also strongly condemned President Petro’s speech on her X account. “The thing about mafia dolls is obviously an unacceptable insult to all women. This is not the first time that Petro has referred to women journalists in derogatory terms. Do you remember the ‘petrovideos’ during the campaign? Yesterday it was confirmed! All my solidarity and admiration for the journalists of this country, “That just because it was an attack against a woman, I stand in solidarity and identify with it,” said the constitutional lawyer, who was part of Petro’s electoral campaign in 2022.
