Where is infrastructure the biggest barrier to purchasing electric vehicles?

Luc Williams

In several Northern and Western European countries, more than one in five people said they would not buy an electric vehicle because of poor infrastructure for electric cars. In Norway, which already has a better electric vehicle infrastructure, only eight percent of respondents said the same.

In Germany and France, around a quarter of respondents (24% and 26% respectively) indicated infrastructure as the main reason for not buying electric cars. In Austria, the figure was 22 percent.

Meanwhile, in both the United States and China, 13 percent of respondents said the same.

The poorer countries of Europe have reasons other than infrastructure

Percentage of respondents who said that limited infrastructure, such as the lack of an adequate number of fast battery charging stations, prevents them from purchasing an electric carwas lower in several Eastern European countries. Although in these countries probably other reasons (e.g. price) make electric cars still not very popular there. In Poland, the share of electric cars (BEV) in the total pool of new vehicles registered in 2023 was only 3.6 percent. On the other hand, poor infrastructure as the most important reason for not buying an electric car, in Poland was indicated by 14 percent of respondents. IN Romania this percentage was even lower (13 percent). The survey results were similar for the countries of the southern part of the Old Continent (Italy 15 percent, Greece 14 percent).
